TimeToSlide - Deathly Lands #2 - Terror Trees (2012)

Developer: Timetoslide
Console: PC, Minecraft CTM-Map
Game Release Date: 2012-03-21

Today's post is a bit of a different one. It's something I tend to do for games with either no soundtracks or boring ones. After about 3 months of on and off gameplay I beat my 3rd ever CTM map in Minecraft.

There isn't anything I need to say about Minecraft that hasn't already been said. It's one of the biggest video games ever made. A CTM map is a custom made Minecraft map with its own dungeons and rewards. In each dungeon or hidden in the map is a number of wool blocks and a monument. To complete the map you must find all the wool blocks and other special blocks and fill the monument with them. Sometimes the map will have a story, other times it could have some kind of cinematic sequence.

Back in September I resumed my (at the time of playing) 8 year run of the map Deathly Lands #5 - Intricate World. With a lot of perseverance I ended up beating it. Shortly after that I concluded Deathly Lands #1 - The Limit. I had started a run of that back in either 2012 or 2011 and ended up losing the save. I restarted it from the beginning and beat it a month or two later. Finally, in November, still energetic from the last two maps I started two others, Super Hostile's Legendary and Deathly Lands #2 - Terror Trees. Legendary's run is for another post but as of January 8 I finally beat Terror Trees. To spice things I up I had two mods enabled, Lycanite Mobs and Hunger Strike. I have a lot of issue with the Minecraft hunger system so I always have it disabled. Timetoslide is the sole creator of the Deathly Lands series.

Out of the three maps I have run recently, Terror Trees wasn’t the best. That said, if I really didn't like it I would not have completed it. For one, throwing Lycanite Mobs into the mix took the difficulty from moderate to extreme. Even with hunger disabled I found myself constantly being slain by Lycanite's creatures. Chupcabras, Gekens, Conbas, Dawans, Ents and Uvaraptors were constantly spawning. Concatapedes were also spawning everywhere despite their inability to attack. Timetoslide also put spawners for the regular mobs all over the place which only served to make things more difficult. At the times I was playing I had the ability to get Halloween candies and later on, Christmas presents which allowed me to get a lot of materials off the bat. One of the mobs spawned in a mycelium grass block so the entire spawned ended up filling up with them.

Each of the dungeons were tough and unrelenting. From the Redstone pit to the void to basement of the four houses each dungeon was its own event for me. The highlight was the untitled area inside one of the walls. Creeper spawners under obsidian, I fucked up and opened a present summoning demon reindeers, Djinns spawning because I was so high up and more shenanigans. It was intense and one of the only places where I couldn't just do death runs. I also loved the diamond tree. Crawling through each floor and clearing it out was epic.

I ended up finding all the wool including one unlisted one. The only thing I couldn't get was the Redstone ore with silk touch. I don't know when enchanting required lapis but when the map was made it wasn't a thing. As such there isn't any lapis on the map. Thankfully there are Lycanite mobs that drop gold and iron ore.

CTM maps don't come with their own soundtracks and I was never that interested in Minecraft's soundtrack. As such I supplemented my own music for it. Now, whenever I listen to these albums I am reminded of the game. They have become video game music.

Here are 3 albums I listened to a lot during this run. These were the best albums I listened to during this run.

All Urban Outfield - Sacrifice Fly

I will forever associate this with that aforementioned area in the wall. The dark production and dark raps complemented it perfectly. K. Clifton is one of my favourite rappers. I can't believe how long I waited to listen to this one. p.Wrecks also does a great job. Some of the best of that dark pacific northwest sound. I was really impressed with the chemistry between both emcees. The songsl ike 227 Asprin and Angel Rape just remind me of stealthily running through spider webs and strategically taking down spawners.

Big Ghost Ltd. - Carpe Noctem

Big Ghost has been popping off lately. Although I didn't like Aguardiente and though Van Ghost was aight this was leagues ahead of that. It's an explosive tape with tons of features. Big Ghost must have been saving his best beats for this. None of the features disappoint either. Listened to this a lot when I started off. I set up the home base, completed a dungeon and secured the central spawn point to this.

Observe Since '98 - Le Dernier Royaume

The last album I really listened to during this run. I really need to give Observe more listens. Portrait of a Savage was essential Shadow Tower Abyss music, but I haven't listened to the rest of this. Unlike the psychedelic boom bap on Portrait this is much more baroque and royal sounding. The production could score 60s French movies. One of the last dungeons I actually did was securing the monument (just made death runs to it before) and this was score to it.

2021 is off to a good start. I still have to complete my Legendary run but that is on hold until some friends aren't as busy.
